About the book:

Behind the Athlete highlights the importance of listening to the voice of conscience, preserving meaning as the backbone of sports activities. This implies accepting our shortcomings; integrating our feelings; taking others into account to encourage dialogue; leading by carrying out our life projects; appreciating authenticity; opening up to enjoyment; and nourishing our spiritual dimension.

BEHIND THE ATHLETE IS THE RESULT OF LISTENING AND THE SEARCH OF MANY IN THE SPORTS WORLD WHO NEED TO REDISCOVER THEMSELVES THROUGH THE PRACTICE OF SPORTS.

Behind the Athlete by Sebastián Blasco was published in June 2022, in a first edition of 1,500 copies which sold out. In March 2023, a second—extended—edition of 1,200 copies was distributed in bookstores all around Argentina.

Excerpt:

One of the first things I rediscovered upon reading this book and reflecting on some of the cases of and quotes from top athletes was something as simple and deep as the following question: what is the meaning behind our job?

Alejandro Kohan

With an overwhelming force, sports raise awareness about some of the everyday elements in society: the ambition of power, individualism, narcissism, hedonism, omnipotence, and the frantic race for success. Specialist Sebastián Blasco introduces us, from an existentialist perspective, to a person‑centered paradigm for promoting the deployment of sports resources.

Behind the Athlete is an easy-to-read book that analyzes different situations to help coaches, athletes, and the general public to reflect on two principles. The first one is anthropological; it defines the essence of athletes, and it poses a question—are they machines set to win or are they individuals practicing sports? The second principle is ethical, and it questions the importance we attach to sports—is it a means to success and recognition, or a path of self-fulfillment?
